【一直后悔】Always Regretful? | 2025年3月8日
有莲友问:
「发现自己做错事了,总是后悔不已,该怎么办呢?」
其实,弥补过错的最好方式,
就是去做正确的事。
这远比无休止地后悔、懊恼、伤心、难过、内疚、解释、辩论,或是自我惩罚来得更有意义。这才是真正的忏悔。
一者,一味地感到后悔;
二者,采取行动去做正确的事。
这两者之间有何区别?
可以说,
前者是消极的;
后者是积极的。
前者只是停滞不前;
后者则是真正的补救。
回想天亲菩萨的例子:他早期曾因所写的佛法有所偏颇而深感苦恼,甚至一度想要割舌谢罪。然而,有善知识劝告他:“当初你用此舌头误说,现在也可用此舌头正说;这样岂不是比割舌更有意义?”
因此,在我们的人生旅途中,
没有时间一直沉浸在后悔中,
没有精力一直沉溺于难过里,
没有空间一直纠缠于辩论中,
没有意义一直自我惩罚。
所有的负面情绪,
都不如勇敢前行,去做正确的事。
当然,有些人也可能会担心:
我还能够回头吗?
我做的错事好像非常严重……
其实,佛门从来没有绝路。
佛说:哪怕犯了五逆十恶,
只要回头念佛,都能消业得度。
那么,还有什么错,是无法回头的呢?
错误再大,能比天亲菩萨谤法之事更大吗?
罪业再重,能比五逆十恶更重吗?
他们都能回头,为何我们不能?
所以,
当下就念佛吧!

过去种种,在此佛号,自可消弭。
未来种种,因此佛号,获得转变。

English Translation:
[Always Regretful?]
A fellow practitioner once asked:
“I’ve realized I made a mistake and feel terrible regret. What should I do?”
In fact, the best way to make amends is simply to do the right thing.
That is far more meaningful than endlessly regretting, brooding, feeling sad or guilty, trying to explain yourself, arguing, or punishing yourself. This is what true repentance means.
One option is to be consumed by regret.
Another option is to take action and do what’s right.
What’s the difference?
We could say the former is passive, while the latter is proactive.
The former leaves you stuck where you are; the latter is the genuine remedy.
Consider the example of Bodhisattva Vasubandhu. Early in his life, he felt great distress because his writings on Buddhism contained errors. At one point, he even wanted to cut out his tongue in apology. Yet a wise man advised him, “You used this tongue to speak wrongly, but now you can use it to speak correctly. Isn’t that far more meaningful than cutting it off?”
Thus, on our life’s journey,
we don’t have time to stay mired in regret,
no energy to remain trapped in sorrow,
no room to get tangled in debate,
and no point in self-punishment.
Every negative emotion pales in comparison to the courage it takes to press forward and do what’s right.
Some may still worry:
“But can I really turn back? My mistakes seem very serious…”
In Buddhism, there is never a dead end. The Buddha said: even those who commit the Five Gravest Offenses and the Ten Evil Deeds can still eliminate their karmic burdens and be saved if they earnestly recite the Buddha’s name. So what wrongdoing is beyond redemption? No matter how great the error, can it surpass slandering the Dharma as Vasubandhu once did? No matter how heavy the sin, can it outweigh the Five Gravest Offenses and the Ten Evil Deeds? If they could still turn back, why can’t we?
So start reciting the Buddha’s name right now:
Namo Amitabha Buddha
Namo Amitabha Buddha
Namo Amitabha Buddha
All past misdeeds can be dissolved by this Buddha-name,
And all future possibilities can be transformed by this Buddha-name.
