Three Experiences of Amitabha’s Protection in the New Year: Peaceful Moments Under the Care of Amitabha Buddha

Three Experiences of Amitabha’s Protection in the New Year: Peaceful Moments Under the Care of Amitabha Buddha

I am Fó Yíng, from Foshan in Guangdong Province, mainland China. I am 29 years old. At the beginning of 2023, I began learning about Master Shandao’s Pure Land teaching of chanting the Buddha’s name. I currently live with my husband and our four-year-old son, in a modest household that is partly rural and partly urban.

[Experience 1]

Date: January 28 (Chinese New Year’s Eve)

That evening, after having New Year’s Eve dinner at my child’s maternal grandmother’s home, we headed back. My husband had drunk some beer, so I drove us home. While driving, I silently recited “Namo Amitabha Buddha” and suddenly felt something off about the car. One of the tires was making a strange squeaking noise. I told my husband we needed to get it checked the next day, but he forgot.

It wasn’t until the morning of February 3 that we discovered a tire had gone completely flat. In other words, from the night of January 28 until the night of February 2, we had driven the car for a total of six days—this included a trip on January 31 to Boluo in Huizhou, over 200 kilometers away, to catch some chickens. In our home, I am the only one who is entirely vegetarian, and my son is mostly vegetarian with me. My husband and other family members still eat meat. When attempts to persuade them are unsuccessful, I can only recite the Buddha’s name silently.

Thinking back, I can’t imagine what might have happened with that tire if not for Amitabha Buddha’s invisible protection. My son and I do chant the Buddha’s name, and there is a set of prayer beads engraved with “Namo Amitabha Buddha” hanging in the car, but no one else in the family believes in Buddhism or chants. Nevertheless, we traveled in complete safety, and for that I feel deep gratitude.

[Experience 2]

Date: February 1 (the fourth day of the Lunar New Year)

Over the holiday, my husband bought a lot of fireworks. I didn’t approve, but since he insisted, I kept on chanting the Buddha’s name. My son is especially fond of little “poppers” called shāpào, which explode with a “pop” and a small spark when thrown on the ground.

On February 1, while tidying up inside the car, I found several unexploded poppers on the seat where I had been sitting that evening. I was stunned and frightened. I carefully removed them, thinking, “Oh my goodness, none of them went off! If one of them had exploded during the drive, I would have been in real danger.” I was immensely grateful for Amitabha Buddha’s protection, keeping me safe.

[Experience 3]

Date: February 2 (the fifth day of the Lunar New Year)

It wasn’t until the evening of February 2 that we finally used up all our fireworks. I was in the kitchen chanting “Namo Amitabha Buddha” while washing dishes, and my husband, son, and other family members were outside setting off the last of them.

Just as I finished washing and stepped out, I saw a spinning spark on the ground—it turned out my four-year-old son had used a lit incense stick to ignite a small spinning firework! We rushed over to pull him back. Even more alarming, there was a large unopened box of fireworks just 20 centimeters away. Had they ignited together, the consequences would have been unthinkable!

Although I was wearing an apron printed with “Namo Amitabha Buddha” and had a soft-playing chant device in my pocket, I was so startled that I didn’t immediately start chanting. It was only once I had calmed down that I remembered to silently recite “Namo Amitabha Buddha,” thanking the Buddha for his protection.

[Afterword]

I’ve never seen any Buddha light or dreamed of Amitabha Buddha, yet Amitabha Buddha is constantly watching over my family and me behind the scenes. I heard that, near my son’s granduncle’s home, someone’s car was damaged by fireworks last year, causing significant loss. Recently, there was also news that a famous Taiwanese celebrity passed away due to illness, once again reminding us of life’s impermanence. This triple world is like a burning house, filled with suffering; yet many beings seek “enjoyment” on the edge of danger without realizing it.

I deeply feel that encountering the authentic Pure Land teaching in this lifetime is an immense blessing. The compassionate protection of Amitabha Buddha is always by our side, and I am filled with gratitude.
